About me

I am a 27 year old mature-aged student completing my third year of Bachelor of Science degree at Griffith University, majoring in Wildlife and Marine Biology. In addition to my studies, I am currently employed part-time in the animal rescue industry and completing my work integrated learning placement as an intern alongside Dr Ronda Green, assisting with the Scenic Rim Wildlife Corridors project.

It wasn't until I reached my mid twenties where I truly understood the passion I had for nature and wildlife, and the even greater passion to protect it. I had just completed studies of Captive Animal Management but I was eager to learn and experience more about animals within their natural ecosystems. I was also curious to learn more about the threats these animals are facing and why it is occurring on such a large scale. From here I decided to take a leap by becoming a student again at 24 and committing to a three year degree (which can be a tough decision to make in your mid twenties!). I've not only learnt so much about the biological world, but have also developed my communication, team-work, critical thinking and problem skills.

I have gained hands-on experience in the field within my current placement role where I continue to develop skills in research methods and use of scientific technology, advanced communication, collaboration and networking capability. It has not only allowed me to connect with nature more then ever but to also connect with like-minded people, both of which has fuelled my passion for conservation work even more and has made me eager to continue work within other conservation projects. Although my passion of protecting wildlife species led me to believe I had to work directly with wildlife, this experience has now taught me that the environment is just as and if not more important to protect, as they provide everything wildlife need to sustain their populations. Because of this, I am now considering post-graduate study in Environmental Management, in hopes I can be a part of sustainable projects and practices in the future and ultimately protect whole ecosystems.

What's next?

My short-term goals are to continue obtaining valuable industry skills and network with industry professionals who can assist me with both my personal and professional development. I aim to continue to learn from and be inspired by nature and develop skills in strategic methods in environmental protection.

I plan to graduate confidently and to gain a job role within the environmental conservation sector. This would mean leaving my current role within animal rescue behind, a role I have would have dedicated 5 years to. I hope I could look back and know I'd made a difference to many little lives.

Despite this, I do love learning and aim to continue studying a Masters in Environmental Management, or other similar post-graduate degree in the near future. As an end goal, I hope to arrive within a career that fuels my passion of environmental protection, and as always simply never stop learning.
